How to play

  1. Press Start. You have 2 minutes for all 11 countries.
  2. Type a country’s name. It counts as soon as it matches and turns green on the map; a country under another letter clears the box, with a note saying which letter it is under.
  3. Pause whenever you like. When the time is up, the lists below the map show what you named and what you missed.

About the countries that start with A

A is one of the busier letters and, with S, one of only two with a country on every continent: 2 in Africa, 3 in Asia, 3 in Europe, 1 in North America, 1 in South America and 1 in Oceania. Most of its names also end in A, which makes them easy to mix up and easy to forget.

More about the countries that start with A (names some answers)

Australia is the largest of them and Antigua and Barbuda the smallest, just ahead of Andorra. Algeria is the largest country in Africa. Argentina is the only one in South America and Antigua and Barbuda the only one in North America. Armenia and Azerbaijan are counted in Asia here but also in the Europe quiz, as on the continent quizzes. “Antigua” on its own counts for Antigua and Barbuda.

Which countries count

A country is under the first letter of the name used on this site, ignoring accents. The two Congos are both under C, where most lists put them. Territories and dependencies aren’t answers, and land outside the quiz is shown in a lighter shade.

Spelling: capitals, accents, spaces and punctuation don’t matter, and well-known alternative names count.

The accepted alternative names appear here when your quiz ends, so they don’t give any answers away.
