About the Greek alphabet
Greek has been written with this alphabet for nearly 3,000 years, and it is still the alphabet of Greece and Cyprus today. The Latin alphabet used for English and the Cyrillic alphabet used for Russian both grew out of it, which is why several capitals look familiar. Science and mathematics still borrow its letters as symbols, so many of the names are easier to remember than they first seem.
More facts (names some answers)
The word alphabet itself is made of the first two letters, alpha and beta, and alpha and omega, the first and the last, stand for the beginning and the end. Omicron means “small o” and omega “big o”; epsilon and upsilon mean “bare e” and “bare u”. In science, π (pi) is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, Δ (delta) a change, Σ (sigma) a sum, λ (lambda) a wavelength and μ (mu) the prefix micro-.
What counts
The usual English spellings count, and so do common variants for the few names that are spelled more than one way. The letters are listed in alphabetical order, the order still used in Greece.
Capitals, accents, spaces and punctuation don’t matter, but the spelling does.
The accepted alternative forms appear here when your quiz ends, so they don’t give any answers away.
