About the Olympians

The Greeks told of twelve great gods who lived on Mount Olympus, Greece’s highest mountain. Ancient sources don’t always agree on who the twelve were, but the list used here is the one most often given today, and the one carved on the Parthenon in Athens. Type the Greek names: the Romans gave most of these gods names of their own.

More facts (names some answers)

Zeus, Poseidon and Hades were brothers who divided the world between them: the sky, the sea and the Underworld. Hades lived below, so he isn’t usually counted among the Olympians. Hestia, goddess of the hearth, appears in some lists of twelve; a story popular since the 20th century says she gave her seat to Dionysus. Athena was born, fully armed, from Zeus’s head, and Hephaestus, the smith of the gods, was married to Aphrodite. Their Roman names: Jupiter, Juno, Neptune, Ceres, Minerva, Apollo, Diana, Mars, Venus, Vulcan, Mercury and Bacchus.

What counts

Ancient sources differ on exactly which twelve sat on Olympus; this quiz uses the most common list. Usual English spellings count; Roman names don’t.

Capitals, accents, spaces and punctuation don’t matter, but the spelling does.

The accepted alternative forms appear here when your quiz ends, so they don’t give any answers away.
