How to play

  1. Press Start. You have 12 minutes for all 98.
  2. Type an answer, in any order. It counts as soon as it matches, with no need to press Enter, and fills in its row.
  3. Pause whenever you like; the list is hidden while the clock is stopped. If you leave mid-game, it waits, paused, until you come back.
  4. When the time is up, the ones you missed fill in, marked as missed.

About Best Picture

Best Picture has been awarded at every Academy Awards ceremony since the first, in 1929. Each row shows the ceremony and the year of the films it honoured; the ceremony itself is held early the following year. The early ceremonies covered seasons that ran across two years, which is why their years are shown as ranges. The list grows by one film every spring.

More facts (names some answers)

Wings, a silent film about fighter pilots, was the first winner, and The Artist (2011) was the next mostly silent one. Ben-Hur, Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King won 11 Oscars each, the record. The Godfather Part II was the first sequel to win, and Parasite the first film not in English. CODA was the first winner from a streaming service. In 2017 the wrong film was read out at first: La La Land, before the award went to Moonlight.

What counts

A leading “The” is optional, and well-known short forms of the longest titles count. Films that won other top awards, such as the first ceremony’s second prize, aren’t answers.

Capitals, accents, spaces and punctuation don’t matter, but the spelling does.

The accepted alternative forms appear here when your quiz ends, so they don’t give any answers away.
