  4. When the time is up, the ones you missed fill in, marked as missed.

About GDP per person

GDP per person divides the value of everything a country produces in a year by the number of people who live there. It is a measure of output, not of how rich a typical person is: it leaves out prices, inequality and who owns what is produced. The richest country by this measure produces more than twice as much per person as the tenth.

More about the ranking (names some answers)

Liechtenstein and Luxembourg top the list partly because many people who work there live across the border, so output is divided among fewer residents. Ireland’s figure is lifted by the profits of foreign companies booked there. Norway and Qatar owe much of theirs to oil and gas. The United States is the only large country in the top ten. Monaco would probably rank first, but the IMF publishes no figures for it.

What counts

Figures are the International Monetary Fund’s estimates for 2026 (World Economic Outlook), at market exchange rates, not adjusted for prices. Territories such as Macau, Hong Kong and Bermuda are left out, and the IMF has no figure for Monaco, so it isn’t ranked. GDP per person measures output, not how well off people are: in some small, rich countries it is lifted by foreign companies’ profits.

Capitals, accents, spaces and punctuation don’t matter, but the spelling does.

Questions

Why is this list different from others?

Some rankings adjust for the cost of living (purchasing power parity), which reorders the list, and sources disagree by a year or two. This one uses the IMF’s estimates for 2026 at market exchange rates.
