How to play
- Press Start. You have 2 minutes for all 32 countries.
- Type a name. It counts as soon as it matches and turns green on the map; a country outside NATO clears the box, with a note saying so.
- Pause whenever you like. When the time is up, the lists below the map show what you named and what you missed.
About NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization was founded in 1949 by twelve countries, as a defensive alliance: an attack on one member counts as an attack on all. It has grown in ten rounds since, most recently after 2022, when two long-neutral countries in the north of Europe applied together. Its headquarters are in Brussels.
More about the members (names some answers)
Two members are in North America, the United States and Canada; the other thirty are in Europe or, like Türkiye, partly in it. Finland joined in 2023 and Sweden in 2024. Iceland, a founder, has no army of its own. Article 5, the promise of mutual defence, has been invoked once, after the attacks on the United States on 11 September 2001.
Which countries count
The 32 members as of October 2026. Partner countries and neutral states aren’t answers; typing one says so.
Spelling: capitals, accents, spaces and punctuation don’t matter, and well-known alternative names count.
The accepted alternative names appear here when your quiz ends, so they don’t give any answers away.
