How to play
- Press Start. You have 2 minutes 30 seconds for all 25.
- Type an answer, in any order. It counts as soon as it matches, with no need to press Enter, and fills in its row.
- Pause whenever you like; the list is hidden while the clock is stopped. If you leave mid-game, it waits, paused, until you come back.
- When the time is up, the ones you missed fill in, marked as missed.
About state populations
Half the states hold about five in six Americans. The largest state has more people than the 21 smallest combined, and the top four together hold more than a third of the country. The order shifts slowly, as people move south and west.
More about the ranking (names some answers)
California, with about 39 million people, has been the most populous state since 1962. Texas passed 30 million in 2022. Florida passed New York in 2014 to become third. North Carolina and Georgia have climbed past Michigan in the last two decades.
What counts
Populations are the US Census Bureau’s estimates for 1 July 2025. The District of Columbia and the territories aren’t states. A state outside the 25 clears the box with a note.
Capitals, accents, spaces and punctuation don’t matter, but the spelling does.
The accepted alternative forms appear here when your quiz ends, so they don’t give any answers away.
