How to play
- Press Start. You have 2 minutes for all 27 countries.
- Type a name. It counts as soon as it matches and turns green on the map; a country outside the EU clears the box, with a note saying why it isn’t a member.
- Pause whenever you like. When the time is up, the lists below the map show what you named and what you missed.
About the European Union
The EU began in 1957 as the European Economic Community, a customs union of six countries. It has grown in seven rounds since, the largest in 2004, when ten countries joined at once, and lost one member, in 2020. Today its members share a single market, and most share a currency.
More about the members (names some answers)
The six founders were Belgium, France, West Germany, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. Croatia was the last to join, in 2013. France is the largest member by area and Germany the most populous; Malta is the smallest on both counts. Bulgaria became the 21st country to use the euro in 2026; Denmark, Sweden and four members in central and eastern Europe keep their own currencies.
Which countries count
The 27 members as of October 2026. Countries in the single market but outside the EU, candidates for membership and countries that have left aren’t answers; typing one says why.
Spelling: capitals, accents, spaces and punctuation don’t matter, and well-known alternative names count.
The accepted alternative names appear here when your quiz ends, so they don’t give any answers away.
