How to play
- Press Start. You have 8 minutes for all 47 presidencies, listed in order with their years.
- Type the name of a president. It counts as soon as it matches, with no need to press Enter, and fills in every presidency that person held.
- A surname is enough. Where two presidents share one, the surname fills in both; a first name or well-known initials name just one.
- Pause whenever you like. The list is hidden while the clock is stopped. If you close or reload the page mid-game, the game is saved and waits, paused, until you come back.
- When the time is up, the presidents you missed fill in, marked as missed. Tap, hover over or tab to any presidency to see its dates, party and state.
Why 47 presidencies but 45 presidents
Presidencies are numbered, and a president who leaves office and later returns starts a new number. It has happened twice, so two people each have two numbers, and the list has two more rows than there are people. Naming either of them fills in both of their rows, so each is worth two points, and the counter counts rows: a perfect game is 47 out of 47.
Show which two (gives two answers away)
Grover Cleveland (the 22nd and 24th) and Donald Trump (the 45th and 47th).
Names that count
The full name counts, and so does the surname on its own. Middle initials are optional, and a few well-known initials and nicknames work too. Capitals, spaces and punctuation don’t matter, but the spelling does. First names alone don’t count, and neither do vice presidents or candidates who never took office.
Five surnames each belong to two presidents. Typing one of those surnames fills in both, the usual rule in presidents quizzes; the full name, or known initials, name just the one you mean. If one of the pair is already named, the surname fills in the other.

Questions
Who was the first president?
George Washington, from 30 April 1789.
Who is the current president?
Donald Trump, the 47th president, in office since 20 January 2025 (as of 30 September 2026). The list is updated on the day a new president takes office.
How many presidents shared a surname?
5 surnames are each shared by two presidents: Adams, Harrison, Johnson, Roosevelt and Bush. Four of the pairs are related by family and one isn’t; the quiz treats every pair the same way.
Why aren’t parties shown while I play?
A party narrows the answer down a lot, so the list shows only the number and the years. After the game, each presidency’s details include its party as a plain fact. The quiz has no ratings, rankings or colors by party.
Where are my scores kept?
